There are two different kinds of natural stone: Siliceous stone and Calcareous stone. Knowing the stone will help you properly care for your granite counter tops.

Siliceous stone:

  • granite, slate, sandstone, quartzite, brownstone, bluestone

  • composed mainly of silica or quartz-like particles

  • durable

  • easy to clean

  • use mild, acidic cleaning solutions

Calcareous stone:

  • marble, travertine, limestone and onyx

  • composed of mostly calcium carbonate

  • sensitive to acidic cleaning products

  • may require different cleaning procedures

Common Sense Approach to Cleaning and Care:

  • coasters are your new best friend (especially for alcoholic or citrus drinks)

  • keep trivets or mats handy for hot dishes or plates

  • seal your granite every one to two years
